Gosberton House School

We were fortunate to have  Hannah Turlington  as our speaker at our Coffee Morning on Monday,
November16
2009.    She has described her role as an Autism Outreach Worker, a job which she
combines with her
teaching post at Gosberton House School near Spalding.
       This involves:-
  • Attending staff meetings in various schools to promote awareness of the condition to
          teachers and ancillary staff.
  • Training for Learning Support Assistants.
  • Provision of a help line service by email or phone.
  • Pupil observation and discussion of strategies with individual teachers.
  • Advice regarding programmes and interventions to support pupils with ASD.
To sum up, the objective of the Outreach team is to provide skills and knowledge to all staff in a
given school and to promote a whole school approach to educating a pupil with ASD.
In addition,
the Outreach team is happy to work with the individual pupil.
To contact them, there is a telephone helpline on Wednesdays   9 am  to  12  noon.

      Supporting Carers to Work

Work Focused Support for Carers   scheme is a voluntary scheme which aims to help people who
wish to combine paid work with their role of caring for someone.  Anyone who wishes to take part
can start or stop at any time.     Through the scheme, you will receive help and support from a Job
Centre Plus personal adviser. This could include help preparing for work, finding suitable training
and support in looking for and applying for jobs.
You will also receive advice on finding replacement care while you attend appointments, take part
in training or attend job interviews.   You do not need to be participating in the WFSC to access
funding for replacement care.

        Who is eligible

The scheme is available to carers who:
1.            do not work or work less than 16 hours a week
2.            are aged 18 or over
3.            are not able to get help from any of the other Job Centre Plus employment
support programmes such as New Deal or Pathways to Work.
If you find a job you are interested in, your personal advisor will be able to tell you how your
benefits will be affected if you start work.  They can also help you apply for any work benefits
or tax credits if appropriate.     To find out more,  contact your local Job Centre Plus Office.

              The Pelican Trust

Still on the vital subject of employment,  the Pelican Trust  ( based in Lincoln ) offers  many training
and educational courses  for adults with disabilities,  to help them move on into the workplace and
improve their quality of life.   I understand the cost can often be met with local authority help, under
the direct payments scheme.       The Trust is a Registered Charity and all of the money made by its
commercial departments is ploughed back into the training courses.

Employment for Disabled People

Social obligation or Individual Responsibility ?

This is a research paper which may offer useful insights to the disabled as to where they stand in
relation to the world of work.     It is pretty heavy going though, so you can click on the icon below
for a brief outline.    The full article can be reached from a link within the  short version.

Fuzzy Eds Soft Play Area

An additional needs session is held at the soft play area at the "Muddle Go Nowhere"  Inn on the
Barrowby Road,  on the last Saturday of every month, at 9-30 to 11 am. ( except December, when
it
is often moved to fit the Christmas situation).     It costs £3 per child,  £1- 50 per additional child.
Juice
and biscuits are included.    Our informant says the atmosphere is friendly and supportive
and they
seem happy to have siblings in as long as they do not upset the special needs children.
If you go to one of these sessions,  you may find you and your child make friends easily.

                  Personal Liability Insurance Scheme

The National Autistic Society has introduced a personal liability insurance scheme, to protect you
if a member of the public holds you responsible for injury or property damage caused by a person
with ASD who is in your care.      The policy offers  cover of up to   £1,000,000 and costs  £26  per
year, however membership of the N.A.S. is required and that costs  £20 per year.
For more information contact  Roy Thomas  on      01737  783  637

                  Wills and Trusts

It is estimated that there are around 400,000 adults with autistic spectrum disorder and perhaps
as few as 15% have employment.   Up to one third of these adults have at least a minor learning
difficulty and live on benefits.  Parents, siblings and other family members who have planned  to
leave a legacy to the autistic person should be aware that it can reduce (or wipe out)  the benefit
received.     If the legacy results in the autistic person having assets of more than £6,000 benefit
will be reduced on a sliding scale.   At £16,000 benefit will stop altogether in most circumstances
and the practical effect will be that the legacy has gone straight to the Government !     In order to
have your lifetime savings used in the way that you would like, it is usually necessary to transfer
it into a "Discretionary Trust", with trustees appointed to look after the running of it.
