Use of sensory rooms

This is how a KIDS practitioner describes their use of sensory rooms for KIDS’ Crèche in Lincolnshire children’s centres.

• KIDS uses the sensory room at Grantham and other children’s centres during the KIDS’ Early Support and Learning Provision sessions.  
• Depending on whether the child needs to have low level stimulus – soothing music, soft lighting or a more interactive session, e.g. tracking lights,  pressing switches to change or control music and colours of lights, KIDS varies the session accordingly.
• The child’s level of need is ascertained through discussions with parent carers, observing the child’s reaction to stimuli and also advice from the Sensory Education Support Service, where necessary.
