Angela, a psychology graduate, and Karen, an autism mum, set up Stages learning materials in 1997.     Their focus is supporting children on the spectrum.     Click icon for their article about developing identity.     They say that identity development occurs primarily in interactions with others.     Fortunately, other children’s opinions may not matter much to many autistic children, which may help to shield them from criticism.

Tony Attwood is an English professor working in Australia.     He has contributed to an article about developing a positive autistic sense of self.     It points to external acceptance and support as an ingredient.     Online autistic communities may also help.

Raising children website, from Australia, looks specifically at teenager identity.     They suggest:

  • talking with your child about how difference is normal.     Everyone has their own strengths, interests and challenges.    
  • your child could joins a sports club or a band to find out where they fit in
  • show your child family photos.
